What I got in February 2014: SOC GLINT, G.I. Joe Roadblock, Psylocke, Star Wars and more

These were the stuff I got in February: DAM Toys Ghost series No. SF001 1/6 scale Special Operations Center GLINT Team Leader: Ryder Watson 12-inch figure, Hot Toys G.I. Joe Retaliation 1/6th scale Roadblock 12-inch Collectible Figure, MC Toys F-029 1/6 scale Snow Space set for 12-inch figures (all set for the Inception movie Snow Scene), Kotobukiya Marvel Bishoujo collection 1/7th scale X-Force Psylocke 8-inch Statue, "Star Wars: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy" book, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson 1/6 scale head sculpt, Christmas card and 2014 calendar from Sideshow Collectibles.

Always enjoy my hauls. Something to look forward to as I enjoy taking pictures and posting them on my toy blog to share with fellow collectors and anyone else who's interested :) Scroll down to see the rest of the pictures.

Used to be you'll think that this boxed figure set was from Soldier Story but not anymore. Dam Toys has upped their game and been churning out some very good stuff lately and this is just one of them. Looks to be an awesome figure. Can't wait to put this together :) In the meantime, check out the preview pictures posted earlier HERE

Hot Toys MMS series G.I. Joe Retaliation 1/6th scale Roadblock Collectible Figure simply ROCKS (pun intended). Cannot wait to see the unveiling? Check out the preview pictures HERE

Haven't seen that many all white snow sets in a while and this looked very promising from the preview pictures released (posted in my toy blog HERE) Let's see what we can kitbash with this ;p

Kotobukiya Marvel Bishoujo collection 1/7th scale X-Force Psylocke 8-inch Statue, already reviewed HERE and HERE. I really like this statue and that's saying a lot since I don't collect a lot of statues and this was one of the exceptions.

"Star Wars: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy" book with dual light-up light sabers was also reviewed earlier HERE. I was blown away by the pop-ups effects.

Alternate Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson 1/6 scale head sculpt. One of those things that are good to have (for kitbashing)

Christmas card from Sideshow Collectibles. This came as a complete surprise and was totally unexpected. Always nice to receive gifts :) feels like Christmas all over again haha

The Sideshow Collectibles 2014 calendar: Capturing Archetypes – Twenty years of Sideshow Art. Beautifully taken photographs of figures and statues sold by Sideshow Collectibles over the years presented over twelve months of 2014.

Darth Vader is covered in May, perhaps to imply "MAY the Force be with you" since May 4 is Star Wars Day ;p

That's all for now. I will be reviewing the figures featured here in March 2014 even as I look forward to new hauls for the coming months.

Preview Sideshow Collectibles Star Wars Clone Wars Captain Rex - Phase II Armor 1/6 Figure

When Sideshow Collectibles first previewed their 1/6 scale Star Wars Clone Wars Captain Rex way back in May 2010 (posted in my toy blog HERE), I lamented how they only have him wearing the Phase 1 helmet (which I didn't fancy at all). Well, guess what? After four years, Sideshow Collectibles has decided to release the Star Wars Clone Wars Captain Rex - Phase II Armor Sixth Scale Figure and this one comes with battle scars :)

Backstory:
One of Kamino’s most esteemed and decorated soldiers in the Clone Wars, Captain Rex serves under Jedi General Anakin Skywalker as leader of the 501st.

Ready to lead the charge, Sideshow’s Captain Rex - Phase II Armor Sixth Scale figure comes fully equipped with his signature grey pauldron, kama and twin blasters, along with a carbine blaster and droid popper for backup. Never one to follow the crowd, the aggressive and freethinking Captain shuns the standard upgrades for his highly customized Phase II gear. His Phase II bucket boasts blue jaig eyes, a Mandalorian badge of courage, along with rangefinder and other welded modifications. Often faced with danger in the line of duty, numerous tally marks along the seasoned fighter's helmet and armor paint a vivid picture of his victories in battle.

Despite his unusual individualism as a clone, there is no doubt that Captain Rex is loyal to his fellow troopers, and always puts the mission first.

Sideshow Collectibles Star Wars Clone Wars 1/6 scale Captain Rex - Phase II Armor 12-inch Figure will come with Detailed Captain Rex Phase II Hybrid Helmet sculpt, Detailed Captain Rex portrait, Fully Articulated Armored Body, Full Body Armor with customized chest piece, Pauldron with chest pouch, "Belt with Holsters, Fabric Kama Skirt, Thirteen (13) interchangable hands, One (1) pair standing pose feet, One (1) pair action pose feet, Droid popper, Two (2) DC-17 hand blasters, DC-15S Blaster Carbine, Black 'Star Wars' logo base. Sideshow Exclusive: Captain Rex Display base

I always feel that all the clone troopers are merely repaints from the same mold because they all have the same identical clone trooper armor but at least the Captains were more individualistic and had slightly different designs and variations, making each of them unique in their own right and Sideshow Collectibles Star Wars Clone Wars 1/6 scale Captain Rex with Phase II Armor is no exception.

Under the helmet is the detailed Captain Rex portrait which looks pretty much the same as the other clone troopers and captains because they are all clones after all, made from the DNA of one Jango Fett. Check out the Medicom Toys Star Wars Episode II Jango Fett Bounty Hunter 12-inch figure reviewed HERE and see the similarity of the head sculpt.

Preview Deluxe Maquette: "Darth Vader and Son" & "Vader's Little Princess" by Gentle Giant

How cute is this?

Based on the "Darth Vader and Son" book by cartoonist Jeffrey Brown, this adorable maquette shows a scene from an alternate "Star Wars" in which the Dark Lord of the Sith is an active father, with li'l Luke very proudly presenting Dad Vader with a Rebel Alliance-pattern tie! Awkward... This charming display stands about 23.5cm tall, and a base is included. It's the perfect gift for anyone who grew up with "Star Wars," and who's maybe even helping someone else grow up with it too!

Gentle Giant has partnered with Chronicle Books to put together something pretty special just in time for Father’s Day. The artisans at Gentle Giant Studios have captured this hilarious and sweet comic as re-imagining, Darth Vader as a dad like any other-except with all the baggage of being the Dark Lord of the Sith. Traditionally sculpted by the Artisans at Gentle Giant Studios, no detail has been overlooked.

Based on the "Vader's Little Princess" book by cartoonist Jeffrey Brown, this adorable maquette shows a scene from an alternate "Star Wars" in which the Dark Lord of the Sith is an active father with a handful of a daughter! Looks like li'l Leia's found the perfect material to practice cutting out Valentine hearts...! This delightful display stands about 23.5cm tall, and a base is included. This would be the perfect gift for anyone who grew up with "Star Wars," and who's maybe introducing it to a new generation of fans!

Each maquette is a numbered cold-cast Polystone collectible featuring a bottom stamp with a matching certificate of authenticity. Comes with an exclusive edition of Darth Vader and Son book or Darth Vader’s Little Princess book

16-page signature with the original black & white concept sketches from Jeffrey Brown! These sketches have not been released to the public until now, and are exclusive to each boxed set.

Review "Star Wars: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy" book with dual light-up light sabers

I had reviewed the "Star Wars: A Galactic Pop-up Adventure" book with light-up lightsaber earlier HERE and enjoyed the book quite a bit, not for the content because most of us Star Wars fans would already know most of the facts inside the book but for the pop-up effects which were astounding and truly a feat of paper engineering :)

This "Star Wars: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy" book is actually the first Star Wars Pop-up book by Matthew Reinhart, renowned paper engineer and bona fide STARS WARS aficionado. "Star Wars: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy" book was a NEW YORK TIMES bestseller and covers Star Wars episodes IV to VI, which to many of us older folks, was the better trilogy of the two because it was the classic that spawned the prequel.

The Pop-up book is divided into six sections. Each section covers a particular subject or topic and within the section are sub-topics. What's most interesting is that most of the pop-ups are hidden under the sub-topic sections via flaps and as you uncover each sub-topic, a pop-up appears, catching you by surprise with how it's cleverly engineered to be folded flat and hidden from view until you lift the flap. Ingenious is the word and so much FUN haha It brings joy to reading LOL. Scroll down to see the rest of the pictures.

I like the cover design of this "Star Wars: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxy" book more than the later version because the latter has Yoda on the cover and Yoda is not as intimidating and foreboding as Darth Vader, third greatest movie villain in cinema history on "100 Years... 100 Heroes and Villains", behind Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates. At the back of the book is a slip of paper showing one of the pop-up pages (the last section) with "working" lightsabers that light-up, red light for Darth Vader and green light for Luke Skywalker. That's pretty CoOL, right?

The first section covers the Star Wars Galaxy and the worlds / planets that exist in them. The Battle of Hoth is the centerpiece with the AT-AT looming and the rebels trying their utmost best to fight the Imperial forces off (as seen in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back). It even has Luke Skywalker about to climb up to the Imperial Walker's belly in an attempt yo bring the lumbering giant down.

Then there's Tattooine and the Death Star destroying Alderaan,

The speeder bike chase on Endor and more... You'll just have to get the book and enjoy it yourself ;p

The next section is titled "Citizens of the Galaxy" with mega predator Rancor taking center stage

Pop-up Chewbacca the Wookie, Wicket the Ewok, Bib Fortuna the Twi'lek, Greedo the Rodian...

Jawas, Wampa, Tuantuan and Space vermin Mynock complete the section.

Oops! Almost left out the Bantha

The third section is all about space ships / starships with the Millennium Falcon front and center but also has a pop-up of a Imperial Scout Walker AT-ST (top left)

The Fourth section has a complete and full pop-up Mos Eisley cantina with all the shady characters you couldn't have thought of

I didn't cover everything that's in the book but you get the picture :) IMHO This "STAR WARS: A POP-UP GUIDE TO THE GALAXY" and the previously reviewed "Star Wars: A Galactic Pop-up Adventure" book (see my earlier post HERE) are MUST-HAVEs for all Star Wars fans, young and old. The book is full of hidden surprises and the pop-up effects are simply amazing and mind boggling.

Other notable books I have covered in my toy blog include:
"The Dark Knight Manual: Tools, Weapons, Vehicles and Documents from the Batcave" - posted HERE

and

"X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe by Michael Mallory", a HUGE (28 cm or 11 inches wide x 36 cm or 14.25 inches high x 3 cm or 1.25 inches thick), heavy, hardcover bound and crammed full of interesting facts (288 pages in all) about the X-Men - posted HERE
